I would like to make a plea to all out there to support some of the New Year’s Resolutions I would love to see come true irrespective of which part of the T continuum you are at/on/part of:-

We spend more time celebrating what we have in common rather than our differences

We spend less time arguing about what what label we call ourselves and more time being more tolerant of each other

We spend less time fighting ourselves and more time fighting the issues which affect us all

We focus our efforts on helping each other to be accepted by the real world so we can work, interact, holiday, socialise and lead the lives we want

We campaign against injustice, ignorance and intolerance to our community

We have more role models living ‘normal’ lives we can look up to

We stop moaning and complaining about unfairness and start to take action

We look to collaborate and pool our efforts so we can make a difference for each and every one of us

We should not let ourselves limit our aspirations, dreams or opportunities – let’s focus on the organisations, people and circumstances which can drive us all forward

I want Transjunction to make a difference this year – all those interested in being part of our mission – feel free to join us

With unemployment for Transgender people running at over 70%, this sector remains one of the most problematic for a range of reasons which include:

Most people and companies have very little experience of Transgender people and their issues

If the person has changed gender, their skills and previous expereince belongs to ‘another person’ and sometimes more ‘appropriate’ (in the eyes of the hirer) for the previous gender

Transgendered people are (unfairly) assumed to need more care and attention or to have more sickness and absence than other sections of the workforce

Some people are simply uncomfortable with the look of someone who is in the process of transition and still not practised in passing in their new gender

There is an assumption that the hormone regime can result in an unstable and unfocused employee

The fact is that with some simple support, any Transgendered person can be easily integrated and become a fully functioning and valued member of any team.

For HR People, some simple policies and training can help them understand the legal and social requirements of the Transgendered person. Some pragmatic advice to handle or even to mediate any existing workplace issues can easily be sourced.

For Managers and team members, some simple information can allay fears and answer some of the most obvious and frequently asked questions

For the Trans person, some support and advice and guidance from an experienced (or ex) Trans person can make all the difference and help them cope with the difficulties that lie ahead.
